If you own an Xbox 360, you most likely have heard of the red ring of death and probably have heard of the Xbox Ring of Death Towel Trick. The Towel Trick is a way where you wrap your Xbox up with a towel so that it gets really hot and it supposedly fixed your red ring of death. Here is the hard truth. Yes the towel trick can work, but, and there is a but. But it will only work for a few weeks and you end up damaging your Xbox so that it may never work again. But don’t take my word for it, let me explain to you why.

The reason why the red ring of death happens has to do with the soldering joints inside the Xbox underneath the chips. It is allegded that Microsoft tried to cut costs by using a cheaper soldering material which had a lower quality. When the Xbox 360 heats up, the soldering joints expand because it is made of some sort of metal. It’s all fine and dandy if the soldering joints expands, it’s supposed to do that. The real problem is when it cools down. When it cools, it forms these air bubbles that cause weak spots called cold solder joints. What happens is under the chips where these weak points are formed, they being to crack with the Xbox 360 always heating up and cooling down.

The Xbox ring of death towel trick will just cause more cracks to form because it gets hotter.

The towel trick only works for a few days because it gets so hot that it melts the solder joints but creates more cracks down the line. The cracks that form are hairline cracks and it is just enough so that energy cannot be passed from the board to the chips.

I highly endorce the Xbox 360 Fix Kit because it fixed my RROD.

Good luck with you Xbox and I encourage you to check out the Xbox Ring of Death site. Add my gamer tag to your Xbox Live.
