Tantra - The Serpentine Ascent - Part I

Occult Vibratory Chemistry existed in India by the name of Tantra.

Tantra is derived from two Sanskrit words - Thanoti ( to expand ) & Trayaten ( to liberate). This Science has the power to expand and liberate !

Expansion means to grow beyond one’s boundaries. Expansion upto Infinity. Thanothi means the expansion of Consciousness ad infinitum.Individual consciousness should expand to Universal Consciousness for mergence in

the Supreme Self.

Trayate means to liberate, to liberate man from bondgage, from the Seven Deadly Sins which bind him to the sublunar world. The purging of mortal dross is a must for Self-Actualisation and the ” inner enemies of man ” Lust, greed, anger, jealousy, sloth, covetousness & attachment ) are the real blocks in the way of Self Actualisation

Liberation is not possible without expansion of Consciousness. When our individual Consciousness expands to Cosmic, we feel whole & are liberated from the thraldom of matter.

The Upanishadic Philosophy was based on the Five Concentric Sheaths known as the Five Koshas. The outermost concentric Sheath, the Anna Maya Kosha, is known as the Material Sheath. It envelopes the other four sheaths -

vital, mental, intellectual & bliss.

Tantra, on the other hand, speaks about the Six Chakras, dynamoes of Cosmic

Energy in the human body.

These Chakras are ( in ascending order)

1. Root Chakra ( Muladhara )

2. Anal Chakra ( Manipura )

3. Solar Plexus Chakra ( Swadhistana )

4. Heart Chakra ( Anahata )

5. Throat Chakra ( Vishuddhi )

6. Eyebrow Chakra ( Ajna )

The Five Great Elements ( Earth, air, water, fire & ether ) & Mind reside

in the Six Chakras.

Earth-Principle resides in the Root Chakra

Water-Principle resides in the Navel Chakra

Fire-Principle resides in the Solar Plexus Chakra

Air-Principle resides in the Heart Chakra

Ether-Principle resides in the Throat Chakra

Mind-Principle resides in the Eye Brow Chakra.

The Microscomic representative of the Macrocosmic Shakti ( Cosmic Power ), the Kundalini, sportest as the Six principles in the Six Chakras in Her Cosmic Play.

O Infinite Power ! Thou art the Mind-principle in the Eye brow Chakra

In the Throat Chakra , Thou sport as the Ether-principle

In the Heart Chakra, Thou sportest as Air- principle

In the Solar Plexus Chakra, Thou art Fire-principle

In the Navel Chakra , Thou exist as Water-principle

In the Root Chakra, Thou art the Earth _Principle, O Mighty Mother !

And in the Crown Chakra, Thou sportest blissfully with thy beloved Consort !

She lies coiled in human beings as the Coiled Serpent Power ( Kundalini). She rises during Mediation and Yogic processes.

Her rise can be felt by the meditator. When She rises, a subtle warmth will be felt in the body. Voice changes. Voice becomes musical, ” propertied as the tuned spheres”. The personality of the native becomes very attractive due to the influx of Jupiterian energy. Wisdom and learning grace the individual. When She rises furthur, torrential bliss will be felt. And when She reaches the Crown Chakra, it is Cosmic Consciousness for the native !

She sports as Universal Power in the Macrocosm; and in the microcosm as the coiled Serpent Power!

Infinite Power of the Absolute art Thou!

The Cause of the Universe as Maya

The entire Creation is Thy Play

Thy blessing is Bliss Absolute !

The essence of all sciences art Thou

All women Thy manifestations !

The visible Universe Thou art

And the dormant Serpentine Power !

One of the pioneers in Tantra Research was Sir John Woodroffe , who had written many scholarly treatises on the subject. His magnum opus is the “Serpent Power”, which is a scientific treatise about the Kundalini. His

practice of Tantra endowed him with personal magnetism. He became the cynosure of all eyes. There was a special lustre on his face, he possessed the Golden Tongue of Good Report & there was a spiritual halo around him. He had developed his Auric Field ( the human electro-magnetic field ) due to Tantric techniques and bacame a dynamo of spiritual energy. His masterly book is a scientific diagnosis about Tantra.

The heart and vocal nervous centers are intimately related physiologically. Bhava Shuddhi or purity of Heart makes the voice innocent and musical. The true Initiate is he whose voice is true and who possesses the Golden Tongue of Good Report!

The Cosmic Shakti is the Force behind the Universe & the entire Universe is her play & display. Kundalini is Her microcosmic representation. She has been depicted as the Mother Goddess in Pagan philosophies.

Nature is visible Intelligence; Intelligence is invisible Nature. The Spiritual & the Natural are not different. That which is spiritual is natural in its ascent & cause. That which is natural is spiritual in its descent and being.

She is the female component of the Ultimate and all systems deal with the male and the female components of Reality. The male component is He ! Consciousness and Force, the Supreme Self and Nature, Matter and Spirit, Being and Becoming, the One and the Innumerable, the Formless and then a delirium of Forms - She and He, two in one, inseparable ! He, outside Time, outside Space, pure Being, pure Consciousness, the Great White Silence wherein everything is contained in a state of involution, contained, yet formless !

She flings forth from Him in an outburst of joy, again to find Him playing in Time, She and He, two in one , inextricable! Can Nature exist without her Lord ? Can He exist without Nature ?

This is the Purusha and Prakriti of Sankhya, the Brahman and Maya of Vedanta , the Sive and Shakti of Tantra !

Without Him, I exist not

Without Me, He is unmanifest ! - The Mother of Auroville

It is due to Her Grace that a man becomes a material success. It is She who gives the successful man the indomitable Will Power needed for success.

On the other hand, it is also Her Grace which giveth spiritual success. It is She who gives the devotee the necessary Self-knowledge, makes him do altruistic acts & leads him to Self-Actualisation. In other words, She has two aspects, material & spiritual and Her Grace is absolutely necessary for success in both the spheres. .

It is said that She, as the Prakriti ( Nature ) of Purusha ( Supreme Self), is the base of the Universe & when She becomes supremely pleased with the devotee, confers on him Self-Actualisation !

She is the Creatrix, She is the Mediatrix, She is the Dispensatrix and the Executrix of the absolute mechanism of Universal Justice.

Power is Divine and not to be condemned

It is this Power aspect of Consciousness which India has depicted as the Divine Mother. It is a mistake of the ethical and the religious mind to condemn Power as something unworthy because it is in its very nature corrupting and evil. Despite arguments to the contrary ( Power corrupts and absolute Power corrupts absolutely), Power, Shakti, Will is the mover of the worlds and basically is spiritual in origin and divine in character !

A Power to call Eternity into Time

And make the body’s joy as vivid as the soul’s !.

The highest philosophic concept is that of the Philosopher-King, he who possesses powers both eternal and temporal. They were known as Raja-Rishies in India. Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, King Janaka were all Raja-Rishies. Marcus Aurelius & Augustus Caesar in the West were also reputed Philosopher-Kings. They did not renounce power !

Tantra as related to Astrology

Tides are caused by the Moon. The human body is 65% water. ( Even the Archbishop of Canterbury is 65% water ). If Moon can effectuate tides, what effect will he have on the human body which is predominantly water? And what about the effects of other planets ?

Economics
, the Science of wealth, is considered as the 18th science. Among the Four Purusharthas ( Wealth, Ethics, Desire, Salvation ), wealth was considered important because without that the body cannot sustain. “Wealth is the fuel of outer life” averrs Artha Sastra, a treatise on economics. Weath is foremost and is the basis of Kama ( Desire ), Dharma ( Ethics ) & Moksha ( Salvation ) !

Sound Symbol of the Absolute art Thou

And the eternal Basis of Vedas triune

The Threefold Deity of Shakti Divine

O Fair Beloved of the Pure Existent !

Artha Sastra ( Economics ) while highlighting the importance of Wealth also warns about its hidden dangers and the pain involved in making money. On the positive side, the merits of Wealth are extolled

The wealthy man alone has friends

All relatives are produced by wealth!

Admired is he who is wealthy

And this world’s true scholar !

On the negative side, the pain involved is highlighted. Making money is not a bed of roses !

Money begets pain in getting

In the keeping pain and fretting

Pain in loss and pain in spending

Damn the trouble never ending !

Tantra does not condemn the three Ws ( Wealth, Wine and Women ) as evil. Man gets fulfillment through the satiation of desires and only after enjoying finite bliss can he aspire for Infinite Bliss ! Karma gets exhausted after the desires for the mundane are fulfilled and man after becoming blase turns within to the Bliss of the Absolute Self !

Integral Consciousness am I, the primal Self !

In me there is neither Ego nor the Supreme Relative !

The Cosmic Power is all in all

As the Supracosmic Transcendence, Her Play is known only to Herself ! Unknown to even the Seers, Her ways are inscrutable ! The 18 sciences are She !

A Brief History Of Tantra

Victor Epand

Tantra is a loose term assigned to practices characterized by ritual, rites of passage, energy work, and the utilization of the mundane to reach the supramundane and understanding the relationship between the micro and macrocosm. These aspects of Tantra can be spiritual and/or material. A guru is often consulted to help the practitioner have a mystical experience and properly guide them through the associated rituals.

Yoga is a vital part of Tantra as it awakens the ability to reach the divine in the practitioner. An integral part also of Buddhism, there is different forms of yoga in existence to meet a person’s spiritual needs - varying from vigorous to peaceful movements. Visualizations, evocations and mantras can also help the Tantra practitioner reach a point of spiritual awareness.

Tantra has had roots in areas of the world such as China, Tibet, Japan, Cambodia and Indonesia. It is closely affiliated with religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. In Hinduism, Tantra ties closely to Vedic tradition- or rather the rejection of the orthodox beliefs. Practicing Tantra is meant to bring the practitioner a blissful feeling of self awareness while sorting away illusions.

The exact rituals associated with Tantra are difficult to pin down since they vary greatly depending on region and the available tantric community. Commonly employed rituals include the repetition of mantras and yantras (amulets) to invoke deities. Feasts and bodily functions can also be included in the rituals. Although it gets the most attention, sexual rituals play a very small part of traditional tantric practices.

The term Tantra is of course most familiar to Westerners for the sexuality related to that small portion of rites. It is believed the sexual practices originated early in the Hindu culture as a means of forming body fluids that were thought to be transformative and a necessary offering to the deities of the Tantra. The fluid exchange often involved man, woman and guru (also a man). The female fluid was thought to be the fluid of the clan and it could be used to mark a man’s belonging to that community. These rituals of Tantra evolved to focus on bliss and the divinity of union.

Tantra evolved when it moved west to become what is known as NeoTantra. The sacredness of sexuality was kept but the involvement of a guru was abandoned, as were some of the ritualistic rules and meditations. NeoTantra followers favor aspects of the Tantra like full body orgasms, the worship of the female and many do still study the non sexual aspects of the rituals.

The history and spirituality of Tantra is so great that those merely seeking sexual thrill might want to look elsewhere. Tantric sexuality is more of a pleasurable religious act than an impulsive physical satisfaction. Studying the meaning of Tantra and employing some of the rituals in conjunction with the acts of physicality will heighten the cognitive clarity that practitioners are truly seeking. The mental effects will last much longer than the physical pleasure, but will pave the path for future enjoyments in bodily union.

Do Alchemy and Tantra play an important part in your spiritual journey?

Dances with Kali

At the base of all human activity one finds the central importance of sex. Religion is no exception. However, the public has not been introduced to the sacred role of sexuality in the esoteric or “secret” knowledge hidden inside every religion. Thus, in modern times sex has become desecrated and defiled, while it was once known to be the entrance into the mysteries of the Divine. Are you bringing this beautiful and honorable path back to the forefront?

Tantra: Divine Union of Man & Woman

Lokita Carter

The meaning of the word Tantra, derived from Sanskrit, is “to weave”. In the tantric lifestyle, we weave together all aspects of our lives into one harmonious whole. Work becomes a meditation, making love becomes our spiritual practice, the lover and the beloved melt into one.

In the Tantric cosmology, the whole universe was created and continues to evolve through two fundamental forces, which together form one indestructible divine union. These are the male and the female aspects, and in Tantra they are represented by the goddess Shakti and the god Shiva.

Shakti represents the female principle of pure energy and dynamic potential, whereas Shiva who embodies the male principle, emanates creation and power. Together, Shiva and Shakti are the divine couple. Their erotic interplay, their cosmic dance, is how the world was created, according to the Tantric belief.

You may have seen Indian art depicting a man (often a Buddha-like figure) sitting with his legs crossed on a lotus flower and across his lap sits a woman, often depicted nude. This is the classic tantric position also known as Yab Yum, and those pictures are known as Yab Yum Deities.

In Tibetan, yab yum stands for “mother father”, and it describes the divine union – energetic and sexual - of mother and father, the female and male principles, Shiva and Shakti. In Tantric practice, the woman is honored as Shakti, and the man as Shiva. There are many tantric rituals in which these essences are visualized and embodied. There is one tantric practice in which the woman straddles the man and together they visualize the divine powers of a Yab Yum Deity above their heads, and eventually allowing these powers to enter their energy system at the 7th Chakra, the crown of our head.

This sounds very interesting indeed, however, how does this apply to our everyday life? Tantra acknowledges that every man has some feminine aspects and every woman has some male aspects. And to live most harmoniously, all aspects are consciously woven into a fabric of balance and understanding.

Let’s look at it from the perspective of the Chinese Yin and Yang philosophy. Yin is the female principle – receptive, soft, flowing - and Yang is the male principle – outgoing, full of initiative, strong. We all carry Yin and Yang inside of us and our actions throughout the day reflect the Yin and Yang aspects. A simple and fun tantric practice is to become aware of our Yin and Yang aspects. Not only is the practice itself entertaining but it can dramatically change the way we relate to our beloved, the world around us and our attitudes at large. Yin and Yang is represented in us in many ways, just as the male and female principles have many colors. For example we consider that the act of giving is a yang action, while receiving is considered to be yin.

Once you have mastered the delicate art of observing yin and yang in your lovelife, you can apply the same attitude towards other actions in your life. You can consciously switch roles for the day. Let’s say your partner tends to be very directive (nothing wrong with that) and you are the one who always does things the way he wants (nothing wrong with that either). But just for the experiment, decide one day that you are going to be the directive one and your partner will surrender to the way you want things done. It will give both of you an understanding about the other person, and deepen the intimacy, clarity and harmony of your relationship.

The Yin Yang symbol (see above) describes a harmonious circle divided into two areas – the black (Yang) and the white (Yin), with a circle of white in the black part and a circle of black in the white part. In Tantra, this symbol represents complete balance of male and female principles.

The Practices of Tantra

Author

In an effort to experience more joy, freedom, love and growth, we often look outside of ourselves, rather than focusing inward. We seek more possessions, a beautiful home, jewelry, shoes, and clothes, often in excess. We resort to food, build up our bodies, take drugs or alcohol. We use religion as a crutch, rather than accepting the fact that Divinity is within all of us.

Tantra is a spiritual path for integrating body, mind and spirit for experiencing our inner joy. Tantra gives us the tools to be totally free from negativity impressed upon us at an early age by family, church, friends and peers. Through tantra we learn to open our hearts to the unconditional love of the Self as well as others. We experience growth and continual expansion.

Tantra means liberation through expansion. By expanding our awareness we learn to distinguish our limited ego nature from our higher nature. As we begin to realize our own divinity, we can see the divine in our beloved, in all people, in all of life. It differs from other paths in its acceptance and use of all the senses, including sexuality and feelings, to help us evolve spiritually. Tantra encourages us to enjoy more fully the world in which we live, as a way to access other worlds.

By practicing tantra we can learn to amplify and transmute sexual energy through breathing techniques, exercises and dance. Instead of being at the effect of this powerful force, we use it consciously to actualize our spiritual potential. We learn to release inhibitions and blocks that prevent us from experiencing our true joyful nature. We come to realize that the physical body is a vehicle for the soul to celebrate and experience joy and ecstasy. We become profound and playful. God learns to play at being human.

We learn true intimacy with our partner by consciously moving and sharing cosmic energies. Tantra can be practiced without a partner as well. As we await our beloved, we work at honoring and balancing our inner male and female. When we combine our analytical, linear, verbal, abstract side synergistically with our intuitive, holistic, sensual, practical side, we find the essence of creative genius.

Tantra teaches us to transcend the limitations of the mind by distinguishing our limited ego nature from our higher self. The ego/mind believes that having its desires fulfilled brings happiness. The omniscient mind lives continually in bliss. As we discover our truths, desires are released, and we come to identify more and more with this bliss body. Rather than living through the mind and the mind’s habit of placing everything in a familiar setting, we learn to trust our intuition about the unexpected and the unknown. We learn to do this by becoming inner-directed, taking responsibility for our lives and learning to live in the present moment.

The many practices of tantra, which include breathing, meditation, movement, dance and sound rejuvenate the body, recycle sexual energy, transforming it for increased vitality and self-healing.

Tantric sex is meditative, spontaneous and intimate lovemaking. Through it you learn to prolong the act of making love and to channel, rather than dissipate potent orgasmic energies moving through you, thereby raising the level of your consciousness. Tantra transports your sexuality from the plane of doing to the place of being. There is no goal in Tantric sex, only the present moment of perfect and harmonious union. Tantra teaches you to revere your sexual partner and to transform the act of sex into a sacrament of love.

Tantra teaches that lovemaking between a man and woman, when entered into with Awareness, is a gateway to both sexual and spiritual ecstasy. It is necessary to purify and master your body and mind. With practice you will awaken the powerful psychic energies through which you can enter into higher states of Consciousness.

Through the sacred act of love, you can merge the dual nature of your sexuality into an ecstatic union. Through this will come the harmonization of your own internal masculine and feminine polarities and a realization of the blissful nature of your Self.

Tantra - The Serpentine Ascent Part IV

Self Actualisation is the Goal

Immortality or Self-Actualisation, which is the Ultimate aim of Tantra, is achieved by the aspirant due to Tantric sadhanas. He will not fall into the trap of selfish temptations He will exhibit divine Love, patience and fortitude, the qualities of a perfected Initiate. He will not use his siddhis for selfish ends. He will be ready to redeem the world from its vices and will be Saviour of all mankind

Such is the likeness of the Yogi’s mind

Freed from sense-storms and burning bright to Heaven

When mind broods placid, soothed with holy wont,

When Self contemplates Self and in itself

To reach this Ultimate Level, tantric techniques alone are not sufficient. Love of the Supreme and renunciation of the Seven Negative Passions are a must.

Devoid of the Seven Deadly Sins ( Lust, greed, anger, jealousy, sloth, covetousness & attachment), with unflinching affiliation to the Supreme Self, he serves all human beings as his brothers and sisters, by the Law of Love and by the Law of Justice !

Understanding The Meaning Of Tantra

Victor Epand

There is a general lack of understanding among people concerning Tantra. What is Tantra? What benefits can Tantra have for me? There is no single solid definition for Tantra, as it can encompass several different subjective meanings and connotations. We can examine the common beliefs about Tantra, and explore its history and variety of definitions to get a better understanding of what Tantra is really all about.

Many people hear the word “Tantra” and automatically think of uninhibited sex, Asian religion, and different sexual positions such as those listed in the Kama Sutra. Others think about the free love fad of the 1960s or New Age sexual therapy. These are very general ideas that don’t really answer the major question.

What is Tantra?

Tantra is a sacred Hindu word that relates to the idea that everyone and everything in the universe are connected. There is a cosmic energy that keeps us all together in the world. Tantra is a mystical and spiritual idea that is rather complicated to explain. It has to do with the cosmic energy of the universe and how we connect with it.

To have a Tantric experience is to connect with cosmic energy in order to accomplish something. This something can be anything that you want, whether it be a physical pleasure, inner peace, or an external goal. Tantra is an open door to a stimulating and spiritual path that we are guided on with the help of the energy around us.

Some sex experts an yoga experts have been said to use and recommend Tantric methods of connecting with the universe. In Tantric sex, you learn to channel your own energy with your partner’s energy to achieve orgasm together. In yoga, you create a spiritual connection between your body and your inner self to find peace and relaxation.

On dictionary defines Tantra as “a form of yoga that teaches the attainment of ecstasy through esoteric, sometimes erotic, techniques.” Yet another dictionary explains Tantra as “a Hindu or Buddhist mystical or ritual text dating from the 6th to 13th centuries… adherence to the doctrines or principles of the tantras, involving mantras, meditation, yoga and ritual.”

Tantra is a spiritual experience. It is a mystical journey that helps you to find pleasure, fulfillment, and peace through meditation and connection with the universe around you. Explore the opportunities for yourself. WIth patience, you will discover what it is all about in time.
