How to make Great Restaurant Nutrition Choices

When you think of good nutrition, you probably don’t think of restaurant eating. Restaurant eating can be bad for your diet or fitness program unless you make good nutrition choices when eating out. You must educate yourself on exactly what good restaurant nutrition is. When staring at a menu at a restaurant, it can be very easy to be tempted by all the choices. Especially when you see pictures of fattening cheeseburgers and nachos and desserts; staying on your diet is nearly impossible. However, you don’t have to cheat on your diet commitments just to dine out once in awhile.

Understanding Basic Nutrition Information

You can always request restaurant nutrition information if it is not readily available. This is the best way to decide what you will order. Fast food restaurants and even your sit down restaurants will provide this information, as they know that many people are trying to watch their waistlines. If a particular restaurant does not offer restaurant nutrition information, then you can still make good nutrition choices if you know even the most basic information about nutrition in general.

Good Vs. Bad Choices

If you are trying to lose weight it is best to steer clear of menu items that are fried in a lot of oil or that come smothered in sauce or other condiments, cheese or butter. These types of foods are very fattening, they can be very high in cholesterol and they can pack many calories into one meal. Some restaurant meals actually have enough calories to feed you for the entire day. And it’s all packed into one meal!

Some good ideas for proper restaurant nutrition are salads with the dressing on the side, grilled chicken sandwiches, and stir fry with natural ingredients. A lot of times there will be a section in the menu for these healthy options, or another menu to choose from entirely. They will call this section the Heart Healthy menu or something to that effect.

If you can educate yourself on nutrition before going, you can stay on plan even when your favorite place doesn’t have many options for sound restaurant nutrition.
