Using Spelt In Your Recipes
You may have come across the name in healthy eating books or in the windows of health food stores but it is acceptable if you do not understand exactly what spelt is. Spelt is, in fact, a grain from the wheat family that has been around for thousands of years, long before bread wheat was ever used in baking. Spelt evolved from a hybridization of two plant species, though which two species is widely contested but ultimately not important. While when it was first used in cooking it was widely cultivated in all areas of Central and Eastern Europe and western Asia, today it is primarily only found in Central Europe as a relict crop.
Although spelt was widely used in baking before the 19th century, once it was replaced by bread wheat its use died out until the end of the 20th century. The reason it has recently regained popularity in food preparation is due to its nutritionally superior values compared to other type of wheat. With the huge increase in popularity for healthy food products came the increased demand for an even healthier alternative to the traditional bread wheat.
Spelt grows in a very similar way to many types of wheat, with a compact bunch of kernels on the end of a long stalk, which begins to bend as the wheat becomes ready to harvest. The reason why spelt is able to boast more nutritional content than traditional bread wheat is because it has a much harder outer hull which protects the wheat from infestation and insects, plus this also enables the kernels to stay fresh for a longer period of time.
This tough outer hull means that as it helps keep the inner kernels fresh for longer, they can retain a higher level of nutrients than, for example, bread wheat. Spelt has also become a popular replacement for bread wheat in certain types of food preparation because it has a low gluten content. Although this means that some people with gluten intolerance may be able to consume spelt, not everybody will be as tolerance levels vary. What is certain is that people with Coeliac disease should not consider spelt an alternative to bread wheat.
Spelt is ground and made into flour in either white or whole grain incarnations and popularly used in bread making. It has a distinctive flavor that is said to taste nutty and sweet. Spelt is also used in other products such as pasta, biscuits and also matzo. One more interesting use for spelt is in alcohol production as it can be used to make beer, gin and in Poland some people use it to make vodka.

Setting Up Ingredients For A Great Dessert
People can enjoy a great dessert that they made. There is a whole array of desserts that one can make like cakes, cookies, pies, and tarts. This will be a review of some of the things a family can make together to ultimately enjoy in the end.
Some people like to play around with the different types of desserts that they can eat. For example, a great cake to be made is with a bundt cake pan. The pan is a deep pan which is donut-shape, but it can give the cake a nice design. With icing put on top, it makes for a beautiful sight to see.
Another type of cake that can be made is one using the round cake pans or square pans. If somebody needs layered cakes, more than one of these pans can be used. Then, the next step after deciding what to make is to find out where to begin. Using the bar surface is a nice place to lay out all ingredients compared to the counter top or kitchen table.
Some people may not know where to get the recipe, and it can be easy to look on the internet for a new recipe. Books are sold as well as magazines. If one does not want to make a cake from scratch, they can use box mixes which usually turn out very well.
The most common ingredients that one needs to make their favorite cake would be vanilla, eggs, flour, and milk. Any extras will be stated in the recipe. The kids love to be involved when it comes to making dessert. They can have the beaters when the batter has been mixed, and they can help pour it into the pan.
One place to make and assemble the ingredients to make the new cake can be the bar. This would provide a different space compared to the countertop or kitchen table. For the kids to see what is going on, they can sit on top of the contemporary bar stools.
Different types of desserts can be easily made at home including cupcakes, cakes, pudding, and jello. Sometimes, special items are needed to make the cakes one wants such as bundt cakes. If one wants a layer cake, a round pan is good to use. Good surfaces to work at include the kitchen table, but sometimes a person might want to check out their bar as a great place to start their cake. Finding great stools to sit at while sitting at the bar is necessary as well. There are different types of stools which one can find that are inexpensive.
Finding the Best Fruits and Vegetables
For most people, buying fruits and vegetables is just a typical part of grocery shopping. But what kind of produce are you really getting? Certainly it’s sanitary, and it’s displayed to look appealing, but could there be produce that is better tasting and more nutritious?
Have you ever stopped to think where that rainbow of fruits and vegetables at the supermarket comes from? While some types of produce may be indigenous to your region, so many fruits and vegetables today are shipped from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. It’s natural to eat vegetables and fruit…but is it natural for them to be flown in from South America?
You can change that – and start shopping in your own latitude - by shopping locally. No matter where you live in the country, there are certain fruits and vegetables that are grown in your area that are more delicious and fresh than you could ever buy in the supermarket. The bonus in finding these foods in your city or town is that you can enjoy the unique bounty of your geographic location while also supporting local farms.
Check community bulletin boards and other resources like the Internet to see where local farmers markets are held. Locally grown produce is fresher so it tastes better. Local farmers are able to plant delicate, better-tasting varieties because their produce doesn’t have to withstand long-distance shipping. Take advantage of roadside fruit stands and tailgate markets (parking lots that are temporarily transformed into commerce areas). Ask questions about where the food is grown. Get to know the varieties of produce that are grown near you.
You can hand pick your own produce by seeking out local orchards, berry farms and pumpkin patches. Here you can get your fruits, veggies and a little exercise, too, because many farms will let you do the harvesting yourself. Go ahead and pick a whole bushel. Many fruits are easy to freeze, like juicy summer berries. Crisp fall apples will keep all winter if stored in a cool corner of your basement.
The best local produce of all, however, comes from your own garden. Why not devote a patch of yard to planting one this season? Even growing a tiny herb garden in your kitchen window will give you fragrant herbs to cook with. If you don’t have space to garden, connect with a community garden. There are over 18,000 in North America where individual members work their own plots. You can look on the Internet for one in your area or contact the American Community Gardening Association.
Finding fresh, local, delicious fruits and vegetables can be as easy as wandering through your local farmer’s market – or even just picking them out of your backyard. When it comes to your health and nutrition, these locally grown gems are a must. In addition, you also help support local farmers, and your community in general, which is good for everyone.
