Keep your hairstyle going all night long
Written by admin on February 5th, 2009You’ve spent ages getting ready to go out, you’re in a new dress and your makeup is perfect. You spent ages on your hair, making sure you got it just right and you know you look a million dollars. But you know before you get to where you’re going your hair will be ruined – straight hair will go frizzy, curls will somehow flatten themselves, it’s as if your style deliberately wants to self-destruct. It doesn’t seem to matter how much effort you put in, you just can’t seem to get it to stay in place. Here are some tips for getting the style you want to last all night long.
Washing: Use shampoo that is right for your hair type. If your hair is dry, don’t use a shampoo that’s meant for greasy hair just because it smells the nicest. They write the intended hair types on the bottle for a reason, so read them! Don’t use conditioner every time you wash your hair. That this is a good idea is a common misconception that leaves lots of people with frizzy uncontrollable hair, wondering what they’re doing wrong. Only use conditioner once every few washes – you will be able to tell when your hair needs it – and you will see an immediate change in frizzy hair, especially if it’s usually curly or wavy.
Drying: If your hair is curly, don’t use a normal hairdryer. Scrunch in a bit of curl-defining mousse and let it dry naturally or use a diffuser. A normal hairdryer will only make your hair big. If your hair is straight, blow-dry it using a round brush and smooth it down with a little bit of serum.
Styling: If you want to straighten your hair, it’s really worth investing in GHD straighteners. Yes they cost a bit more but it’s worth it as they are reliable and the effect lasts much longer than many of the cheaper brands. Beware of artificially straightening or curling your hair all the time as it can cause damage and dryness – use your styling tools sparingly and, if you do notice more dry split ends than usual, use a leave-in conditioner or repair product to stop it going any further. GHD also offer a good range of products specifically designed to protect heat-styled hair.
Finishing: If you’re going for a straight, sleek look and have used GHD straighteners, then a bit of hairspray or wax will hold the style in place - if your hair is not naturally straight be sure not to use too much finishing product as it will likely cause it to go wavy later on. For curly or messy looks, be sure you use a spray that is light and won’t weigh the hair down.
Don’t leave your hair to the last minute, make sure it’s done in enough time that it is fully dry and set in its new style before you go out. Going out with your hair still damp or warm from straightening/styling means your hair probably won’t last! Provided you care for your hair and use the right products for your hair type, you’ll find a style that will keep going for as long as you do!
