What Causes Age Spots – Arm Yourself With The Power To Heal And Prevent

Age spots is certainly a somewhat misleading name to attach to the dark skin pigmentation that becomes more prevalent with old age. So, exactly what causes age spots?

Age spots, or liver spots as they're also called, haven't got much to do with aging as such. The real cause of these dark spots is sun exposure. It is indeed all the time you spent in the sun that is coming back to haunt you.

Care should be taken from a young age

Age spots are common in older people, but it is not uncommon to find them in people as young as their twenties and thirties, depending on skin type and sun exposure.

Naturally they're most common on the areas of the body that normally see a lot of sun, like the shoulders, face, arms and hands.

UV radiation, that invisible menace to the skin, is the main cause of the problem. Too much UV radiation causes an overdose of pigment to accumulate in the skin. This eventually becomes the brown spots that we know as age or liver spots.

Fortunately age spots are not dangerous in the majority of cases, but in the same breath I have to say that making a trip to your doctor just for a precautionary assessment is not the worst idea in the world. Skin cancer can start out looking like harmless dark blemishes.

Treatment

You can treat these dark blemishes in multiple ways. You can in fact do something about these spots if you don't want them around.

Prevention is better than cure, so start protecting yourself from the sun right now, even if you already have age spots.

If you don't have them yet, good. Keep slapping on a safe sunscreen. A sunscreen of SPF 15 is recommended by dermatologists to filter out most of the damaging UV rays.

Topical bleaching creams should be used with extreme caution, and harsher dermatological procedures like chemical peels should also only be used in extreme cases.

Often these procedures have to be repeated many times for good results, which can be expensive and you'll still need to use a topical treatment afterwards. Don't go for extreme treatments until you've at least tried a safe, natural and painless bleaching cream.

It's not difficult to find a safe herbal age spot remover if you know where to look.
