Acne is a skin disease that may result in harsh scars. The healing process of skin swelling by white blood cells and anti-inflammatory molecules causes these scars. Acne scars are of two types- depressed scars, such as ice-pick scars, and raised fibrous tissue, such as keloids.

There are several surgical treatments available to get rid of acne scars. Take a look at these treatments to understand them better.

Dermabrasion- In dermabrasion, a doctor removes the surface of your skin by erosion. This is done through the utilization of a wire brush that spins at high speed. It is a very painful procedure and typically needs anesthesia. After this procedure, your skin becomes red and raw and it takes several months to heal. This technique is helpful if your scars are raised above the encompassing skin.

Microdermabrasion- This is another form of dermabrasion in which a doctor removes only the uppermost surface cells of the skin by employing aluminum oxide crystals passing thru a vacuum tube. This procedure might require multiple sittings but does not cause any injury to the skin.

Chemical Peeling : chemical peeling involves the use of certain chemicals to remove the top layer of the skin. Once regenerated, the skin is not just free from scars but also smooth and soft.

Laser Therapy- This scar treatment is centered round the process to make wounds on your skin via microscopic pulses of light. This light destroys the injured skin tissue and creates way for new cell growth. It even stimulates collagen production. Increased levels of collagen along with new skin cell formation help you get rid of scarring.

Subcision : this technique is used to treat deep rolling scars due to acne. Here, the skin tissue in the affected area is separated from the deeper scar tissue. This enables the collection of blood under the affected and thus, causes the deep scar to come to the level of the skin. Once the skin has been leveled, acne scar treatments like laser treatment, chemical peeling and Dermabrasion are performed to smooth out the scarred tissue.

Punch Grafting: this surgical procedure involves the importing of small parts of the skin from other parts of the body to replace the acne scarred skin. The scar tissue is removed with the help of a surgical instrument after which there may be a little hole left on the skin. This hole is filled in with the imported skin part. The area usually takes roughly a week to cure and the skin sometimes becomes smooth after the recovery process is complete.

Some other techniques to treat acne scars include cortisone shots and cryosurgery.
